The Helsinki Geoeconomics Society was born from a vision to bridge diverse fields within geoeconomics, uniting researchers, policymakers, and industry leaders to address the complexities of today’s interconnected global economy. It all began in 2012, when Mikael Wigell launched a research focus on geoeconomics at the Finnish Institute of International Affairs (FIIA). At the time, geoeconomics—a field rooted in the pioneering work of scholars like Edward Luttwak and David A. Baldwin—was relatively niche.
Over the following decade, geoeconomics gained momentum as the significance of economic tools in achieving political goals became increasingly apparent. This momentum culminated in the creation of the Helsinki Geoeconomics Society, headquartered in Helsinki, which now serves as a global hub for geoeconomic research and practice. Our Society is dedicated to advancing knowledge through publications, symposia, and the prestigious David A. Baldwin Fund and Prize, recognizing groundbreaking contributions to the field.
Today, Helsinki Geoeconomics stands at the forefront of exploring how countries use trade, investment, and finance to achieve strategic objectives. Through our events, publications, and community initiatives, we bring together experts across disciplines to develop cohesive strategies for addressing the challenges and opportunities in geoeconomics. Join us in shaping the future of this essential field.
